The White Oak Shopping Center encompasses four single-story retail lifestyle buildings, and one single-story retail anchor building totaling 600,000 square feet within a major new retail shopping complex located in Henrico County, Virginia.
The lifestyle buildings include two L-shaped structures approximately 54,000 square feet each and two rectangular structures approximately 19,000 square feet each.
The junior anchor structure contained four tenant spaces for a total of 81,000 square feet. WS was responsible for the foundation and structural steel design. Cross bracing to resist lateral wind and seismic forces were only able to be located in a few demising walls. In the rest of the structures, the lateral resistance was obtained by using flexible moment connections, which provide lateral restraint with more economical components than if it were a completely rigid moment connection.
Each lifestyle building had a custom tower feature at each building facade corner, requiring several custom designs in each building.
