USGlass Magazine, the magazine of influence for glass industry leaders, decided in 2007 to recognize glass industry leaders in their First Annual USGlass CEO of the Year Award. John L. Wheaton, P.E., CEO of Wheaton & Sprague Engineering, a full-service structural engineering firm in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio was the award winner in the small company category. Although Wheaton & Sprague Engineering offers full-service engineering for the building envelope – exterior curtainwall, the building primary, and building forensic applications, this award highlighted Wheaton’s expertise and national renown in the building envelope, or curtainwall industry. Wheaton was featured on the cover of the December 2007 issue of USGlass Magazine.
The winner in the large company category was Don Pyatt, CEO of Viracon, an architectural glass fabrication company out of Owatonna, Minnesota.
Criteria for the nomination included an evaluation of the CEO’s communication skills, examples of his or her commitment to their organization and employees, their vision for future growth and the ability to see outside of the box. Specific examples were required of how this person leads his/her company toward excellence; the nominee’s abilities to service his/her company; and a detailed description of how the nominee has taken his/her leadership to the community as well.
Wheaton was nominated for the award by Dan Adams, president of Advanced Industrial Marketing and a member of Wheaton & Sprague Engineering’s (WSE) board of directors. Of the nomination and the award, Wheaton says: “It's humbling to be nominated and to receive this award. It gives me pause to reflect on how grateful I am for the people who surround me and have brought our firm this far. It also challenges me as we move toward 2008 and beyond to never rest on the past, but to continually work to improve upon my leadership abilities.”
