Architectural grade aluminum windows were being installed during an historic renovation at John Hay High School in Northeast, Ohio. The owner wanted to be provided with reasonable assurance that the windows were being installed according to design standards, construction drawings, approved shop drawings, manufacturer’s information, and related documents & standards. The majority of the windows were installed, but openings still remained, not yet re-glazed. The installation of the windows needed to be confirmed for air & water infiltration integrity and structural criteria including anchorage, and any unique field conditions. Wheaton Sprague (WS) provided consulting services to accomplish this work by reviewing specifications, shop drawings; manufacturers data, structural resistance and field installation. We provided ongoing correspondence and field reporting as needed, which culminated in a complete report. WS’s strategic value on this job was primarily to point out to the owner that the window panning and sealant continuity details were not detailed nor installed correctly, which could have led to excessive infiltration in this facility.WS’s recommendation and consultation culminated in the architect of record providing a revised bid package with remedial sealant details addressing the infiltration issue. The project was successfully re-bid by glazing subcontractors and completed.
