BUILDING ENVELOPE CONSULTANT

Growing Building Envelope firm seeks person with approximately 5 years of experience within the building envelope / curtainwall / cladding industry either at a top tier full service trade contracting firm, manufacturer, professional services company or combinations thereof, or; previous building envelope consulting experience at a building envelope / curtainwall consulting firm of at least three (3) years, coupled with a Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction or architecture.

Current knowledge base or knowledge base expected to be acquired:

(We expect that the candidate for the position will already have at least 50% of the knowledge base listed below, and that the majority of the remainder of the listed knowledge base would be acquired prior to promotion to the next level of consultant within our firm)

  • Building science concepts related to performance aspects of building envelopes.
  • Design, manufacturing and installation knowledge in several of the following:
    • Glazed wall systems, panel walls and other fenestration elements.
    • Point supported and structural sealant glazed glass.
    • Unitized, semi-unitized and stick curtain wall systems.
    • Hurricane, tornado and blast resistant wall systems.
    • Masonry, stone facades and cast stone.
    • Portland cement plaster, GFRC, FRP and EIFS systems.
    • Sealants, waterproofing, insulation and fire safing.
  • Some knowledge of building materials, field investigation methods, and scientific principles as they relate to building envelope performance.
  • General understanding of codes, technical standards and 3 part technical specifications.
  • Commissioning concepts.
  • Climatic and environmental influences in one or more regions.
  • Costing concepts for materials and labor.
  • Current art and emerging art.
  • Means and methods, best practices.
  • Construction contract processes, practices and administration.
  • Materials and finishes differentiation.
  • Some exposure to performance testing and QC testing.
  • Common modes of premature building envelope failure.
  • Case history of successful installations and products.

  • Prospecting, proposing, presenting and selling.

  • Tactfully maintains project team focus on meeting the specified criteria.
  • Recognizes and detects conforming or non-conforming work.
  • Diagnoses causation(s) of water intrusion or other deficiencies.
  • Building envelope and fenestration system design.
  • Strong computer skills including CADD, THERM and Microsoft Office and other computerized solutions that are commonly used within this industry. Willingness to learn and adapt to changing technologies, and with various methods of electronic file transfer.
  • Produces legible hand made notations and sketches.


Duties:

  • Learn how to seek out proposal opportunities and how to sell services.
  • Assist with defining scope, estimate and preparing professional services proposals.
  • Perform consulting services. Assist with managing assignments.
  • Be responsible for completing assignments on time and on budget (hours and dollars). Communicate updated projections to supervision as assignment progresses (well in advance of negative trending). Communicate projections of impending or eventual additional services to supervision well in advance so that payment for additional service efforts and expenses is cleared prior to expending efforts and expenses.
  • Prepare change orders for added scope or services.
  • Supervise, coach, teach and train internal and external resources.
  • Stay current with new and emerging technologies, convey to WS colleagues.
  • Work in the field and travel by air, train and automobile as projects require.
  • Observe building envelopes at heights from aerial lift equipment and stages.
  • Apply building sciences as related to performance aspects of building envelopes.
  • Assist clients with building envelope design.
  • Prepare construction documents or peer review documents prepared by others.
  • Prepare or peer review 3 part technical specifications.
  • Review trade contractor proposals, qualifications, exclusions and submittals.
  • Observe and report on building envelope testing and construction.
  • Provide building envelope condition assessments and probable costing.
  • Prepare reports with captioned photographs and other technical reports.
  • Provide commissioning services.
  • Provide repair or remediation designs and assist with probable costing.

Participate in technical standards and/or professional organizations.





SENIOR CURTAIN WALL DESIGNER 
Wheaton Sprague is currently looking for a person with 10 years curtain wall experience. This person must have significant experience in leading shop drawings and fabrication drawings. We require 5 years minimum experience with AutoCAD, including AutoCAD 2007 or newer. Our ideal candidate must have excellent abilities in oral and written communication. They must have excellent ability in making drawings readable and unmistakably clear. We would like someone with a track record of few errors. 3D AutoCAD experience is preferred. Revit / BIM experience is a plus.
