Working with TC Architects of Akron, OH, Morrissey Construction of Oceanside, CA and Elderly Housing Development & Operations Corporation (EHDOC) of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Wheaton Sprague (WS) provided foundation and structural engineering and consulting for the Edward Romero Terrace, a 40-unit, 35,000 sq. ft. senior citizen apartment building located in Albuquerque, NM. The foundations utilized normal spread footings and wall footings that extended to frost depth of at least 24 inches.
The four-story building was designed with 2x6 wood stud bearing walls. Shear walls were located throughout the building in both directions to resist the lateral forces from wind and seismic loads and utilized hold-down anchors at their ends. Each floor was supported by 16 inch wood I-joists that spanned the 24 feet between bearing walls. The roof framing consisted of metal plate-connected wood roof trusses.
Wheaton Sprague also provided the design for the facility’s gazebo framing and maintenance screen walls.
