Cunz Hall, The Ohio State University
Columbus, Ohio
Cunz Hall is the future home
of the College of Public Health for The Ohio State University. The current
4-story building, built in the mid 1960’s was built in a style known as
“Brutalist”. The building has experienced significant problems in the area of
air and water infiltration. The proposed renovation of the façade is designed
to remedy the problem of air and water infiltration and to update the look. The
overall renovation, which will cost $24 million dollars, will feature the 70
faculty/staff offices; 11 wet laboratory spaces plus a teaching lab; four
classrooms; two student computer labs; a student lounge and common areas for
faculty, staff and students. It will house all divisions of the College of Public Health including the
administrative offices of the College; the Center for Public Health Practice;
the Center for Health, Outcomes, Policy and Evaluation Studies (HOPES); and the
new Center for Health Equity and Multiculural Health. The intention is to bring
faculty, staff and students "under one roof" by Fall, 2011. As Building Envelope Consultant, Mark Coulis is peer reviewing specifications and
details of the facade reconstruction; LEED requirements; consulting on selected
materials and finishes; consulting on the selection of system types; building
code requirements; wind load requirements; air and water infiltration
considerations, inclusive of secondary barriers and drainage to the exterior;
effects on the envelope systems for building frame movements resulting from
wind and/or seismic forces; consideration of building structure tolerances;
consideration of thermal movement requirements; system attachments; flashing
details; sealant selections; environmental conditions; consideration of the
energy code requirements for the project, and consideration of the fire
resistance systems. Mark is presently in the process of reviewing contractor
shop drawings, calculations and other project submittals, attending meetings at
the job site, assisting in the bidding and award process for the envelope
contract(s), performing periodic job-site observations; reviewing contractor
quality control procedures and making appropriate recommendations to the
Project Team. This project is still in progress. Wheaton Sprague will conclude
the project with the commissioning of the Building Envelope for the owner.
