Wheaton Sprague provided foundation engineering, structural steel engineering and shop drawing review for the centerpiece of the expansion of Akron General’s renowned Health & Wellness Center in Stow, OH.

The new medical office center features a 42,000 square foot, four-story building with a 45 foot long connector joining it to the adjacent building.  The building’s facade is a brick and splitface block veneer supported by light gage framing. The floor design incorporates a concrete slab on composite metal deck supported by compositely-designed beams to keep steel costs to a minimum. Lateral stability was accomplished by using moment frames along the building perimeter to meet the need for unobstructed tenant space and to provide for open views through the numerous glass windows.

Wheaton Sprague worked closely with the architect and construction manager early in the project to help produce a construction cost estimate based on our prelminary steel design. Working within the final budget, WS continued to refine the steel design, working with the Construction Manager, to reduce the overall steel weight. WS also helped develop several concepts for framing the exit stairs within the two stair enclosures.

The building’s design and location takes into account patient convenience and ease of use, making it the destination for comprehensive healthcare services with everything a patient might need in one location.
