Wheaton & Sprague to provide BIM Services
In our plan to implement reality-based, client-centered BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology and practice standards, WS's number one goal has been to find a person who has knowledge and experience and has observed the growth of these technologies for Building Information Modeling. We wanted someone who could implement for us, and navigate with our clients, through the murky waters of what it means to have BIM capabilities in the building envelope industry. We want to charge someone with the task of integrating the technology for the benefit of the client and the project both today and in the future.

We have researched, read, and surveyed our clients to ascertain needs, questions, and desires for the implementation of this technology into our company and into the industry to which we are dedicated. We have interviewed many candidates and we are now very pleased to announce the addition of Mr. Jon McFarland as the BIM Coordinator to our Building Envelope Division.

Jon quickly, and in short order, has been able to provide value in consultation with us and our clients regarding the integration of BIM models into current and proposed projects. Wheaton & Sprague will utilize Revit software by Autodesk, augmented with 3D AutoCad, to support our clients' needs related to BIM. It is our mission to serve our clients with this new service, and to become a leader in the building envelope industry, as it relates to the implementation of BIM processes.

We are pleased to be able to provide these services to you and will be keeping you up-to-date regularly as we further build our capabilities and services.

Jon McFarland, BIM Coordinator, Wheaton & Sprague, Inc.

Mr. McFarland has worked in the architectural and construction fields for many years, most recently as the CAD Manager for Forest City Enterprises, a national developer, owner, and manager of retail and office properties.  He has also written and edited many books on computer graphics and taught AutoCAD, Revit, and several other computer graphics programs at the college level.  Jon is a graduate of Cleveland State University in Ohio, with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology.

What is BIM?

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the process of generating and managing building data during its life cycle. Typically it uses three- dimensional, real-time, dynamic building modeling software to increase productivity in building design and construction. The process produces the Building Information Model (BIM), which encompasses building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, and quantities and properties of building components. Revit by Autodesk, is software used for building information modeling (BIM) which, according to Will Ikerd, writer for Glass Magazine, “the BIM process will fundamentally change the glass and curtain wall industry before 2015.” This building information modeling (BIM) software facilitates a new way of working collaboratively between the architect, engineer and individual trades to create a model with consistent,  reliable design information – enabling faster decision-making and coordination, better documentation, and the ability to evaluate sustainable  building and infrastructure design alternatives using analysis to predict performance before breaking ground. President John L. Wheaton, P.E., LEED AP says “our implementation of both of these strategic practices is a statement of our commitment to our building envelope expertise, and our desire to further our expertise for the benefit of our clients. We believe that execution of both of these services will continue to improve our position us as a full-service building envelope firm, and will benefit both our Building Envelope Consulting and our Building Envelope Engineering clientele.” For inquiries about BIM Services, please contact Richard Sprague, Vice President or call 330.923.5560.
